Wide-Body Airliners
Extremely Large Aircraft, Long Haul, Very Large Groups

To distinguish jet aircraft that might be simply described as 'airliners', the terms narrow body and wide body are used. A wide-body aircraft is a large airliner with two passenger aisles. The typical fuselage diameter is 5 to 6 m (16 to 20 f In the typical wide body economy cabin, passengers are seated seven to ten abreast.

Wide Body Airliners
A Wide Body Aircraft is an airliner that has two passenger aisles and the term is used to distinguish them from their single aisle counter part, Narrow Body Aircraft. The cabin is typically 5 to 6 m (16 to 20 ft) wide and seating can be arranged from 7 to 10 abreast configuration and provide enough room to stand and walk around. The largest wide body aircraft are over 6m (20 ft) wide and can accommodate up to eleven passengers abreast in high-density configurations. Passengers can enjoy a full range of amenities from a full galley offering both hot and cold food, a private lavatory, in-flight entertainment and generous sized baggage compartments. Flight attendants are available to enhance the passenger experience and maintain safety. The largest wide body aircraft are the Boeing 747 and Airbus A380, and are known as Jumbo and Super Jumbo respectively due to their very large sizes.

There are many types of Wide Body Airliners available including Boeing 767-300ER manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The 767-300ER, the extended range version of the 767-300 is made possible by greater fuel capacity and a higher MTOW and is the most successful version of the 767. The 767-300ER has two Pratt & Whitney PW4000 (63,300lbf), General Electric CF6 (62,100lbf), or Rolls-Royce RB211 (59,500lbf) engines. It is capable of flying 11,070 km (5,990nm) at 851km/h (530 mph) at a cruise altitude of at 35,000ft. The cabin is 132ft long, 15ft6in wide, 9ft5in high and carries 218 passengers in a three-class cabin layout, 269 passengers in two-class, or 350 passengers in a single-class layout.

A330-300 manufactured by Airbus Industrie is another example of a Wide Body Airliner. The A330-300 is essentially a stretched A300-600 fuselage with new wings, stabilisers and fly-by-wire systems and powered by either two General Electric CF6-80E (72,000lbf), Pratt & Whitney PW4000 (70,000lbf), or Rolls-Royce Trent 700 (71,100lbf) engines, all of which are ETOPS-180 rated. This aircraft can fly 10,500 km (5,700 nmi) at a speed of 871 kph (537 mph) cruising at an altitude of 36,000 ft (certified for a maximum 41,100 ft). The cabin is 165ft3in long, 17ft4in wide and carries 295 passengers in a three-class cabin layout, 335 passengers in two-class, or 440 passengers in a single-class layout.

A very popular Wide Body Airliner is the Boeing 777-300ER manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes.  This airliner features further developments over the original 200 and 300 series with new raked and extended wingtips, a new main landing gear, reinforced nose gear, and extra fuel tanks. The 300ER exclusively uses the General Electric GE90-115B (115,540lbf), currently the most powerful jet engine in service with a fan diameter of 3.429m. The maximum range is 14,690km (7,930nm), made possible due to a higher MTOW along with the increased fuel capacity. The Boeing 777-300ER can fly between 905-950 km/h at 35,000ft and is certified for 43,100ft. The cabin is 194ft long, 60ft8in wide, and 7ft9in high and carries 365 passengers in a three-class cabin layout, 451 passengers in two-class, or 550 passengers in a single-class layout. Due to its high efficiency, large cargo capacity and low maintenance costs the 300ER is proving extremely popular amongst airlines, many using this aircraft to replace aging Boeing 747-400’s.
